The top most layer of the skin is the stratum corneum that acts as a barrier between the lower skin layers and the outside environment. This layer is where fine wrinkles, blemishes and skin imperfections occur. When one applies lotions to the skin, only part of the moisture penetrates to the lower layer. Microdermabrasion treatments are non surgical and rejuvenate and freshen the facial skin and take place at the stratum corneum level. This is a less aggressive approach as opposed to dermabrasion as the beauty therapist uses an abrasive instrument that gently sands the skin, removing uneven and thicker outer layers. There are two different types of treatments; one is using a diamond tipped wand and the other a handheld device.
Microdermabrasion is used to treat sun damage and discolouration, to lessen the appearance of wrinkle and fine lines and treat light scarring as well as other skin conditions.
